Setting the stage
We began by reading the story of the wind and sun
.
.
After a brief talk about the history of the wind and sun: we started to think how
we could measure the wind and we then decided to build an instrument for measuring wind:an anemometer.
Let's build an anemometer!
First we
cut the rim of the plastic cup to make it lighter. Then we painted the outside of one of the cups with a felt pen.
We pushed a drawing pin through the centre of the cardboard and then we attached the cardboard cross with the cups on it to the eraser point of a pencil.
We crossed the cardboard strips so they make a plus(+) sign. and stapled them
together
We used a ruler and a pencil and drew lines from the outside corners of where
the cardboard strips came together to the opposite corners. Where the pencil
lines crossed we found the exact middle of the cross.
We pushed a drawing pin through the centre of the cardboard and then we attached the cardboard cross with the cups on it to the eraser point of a pencil.
We made sure the cardboard was spinning around freely on the
pin by blowing on it.
The testing
We went to our playground and each group took thier anemometer. They placed it in a
open space away from any walls. For a minute we counted the number of laps that our
anemometer turned. It was very funny!
